“He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.” Psalm 18:19
“I called on the LORD in distress; The LORD answered me and set me in a broad place.” Psalm 118:5
“Indeed He would have brought you out of dire distress, into a broad place where there is no restraint; And what is set on your table would be full of richness.” Job 36:16
For some, a broad place might conjure up thoughts of danger, being exposed to unknown threats. But in the Scriptures, God means a broad place to be a safe place… where He is… where we can find refuge from those very threats we imagine.
The Hebrew word “merchav” literally means an open, roomy space. Figuratively, it symbolizes liberty…quite the opposite of distress. And as Job says,” where there is no restraint.”
The Hebrew word “metsar” however, translated “distress”, means tight or constrained, as many of our troubles and trials can make us feel. God wants to deliver us out of that constricted space into His broad place where there is nothing to fear…a place of safety and peace.
As these pages will hopefully testify, His faithfulness to deliver me from some pretty tight spaces astounds me. As I continue to call on Him, He continues to bring me to that place of freedom. It’s quite a journey and I invite you to join me taking that next step into a broad place.
